The United States faces a health epidemic of unparalleled proportions
· More than 1.7 million Americans die of a chronic disease each year, accounting for about 70% of all U.S. deaths.
· Five chronic diseases - heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and diabetes - cause more than two-thirds of all deaths each year.
· Chronic diseases account for about 75% of health care costs each year, or $1.4 trillion dollars.
· Chronic disabling conditions cause major limitations in activity for 1 every 10 Americans, or 30 million people.
· Chronic disease is not just an issue among older adults. One-third of the years of potential life lost before age 65 are due to chronic disease.

Although chronic diseases are among the most common and costly of all health problems, they are also among the most preventable. Nutrition is one of the major lifestyle factors related to development of chronic diseases.

The importance of nutritional education to general population is widely recognized. Evidence indicates that with education, people can and will take charge of their health.

Overview
Humanitas International Foundation (HIF) has developed the Level 1 Course in Nutritional Education and Health for general public in a distance - learning format. HIF has had the guidance of medical professionals and scientists with knowledge and clinical expertise in Health Education, Preventive Medicine and Nutrition to create this course.

The main objective of this course is to promote healthy people through nutritional and health education. The course utilizes principles of "Learning by doing" and a self-teaching design as well as self-assessment examinations at the end of each chapter.
